AUTO BODY/COLLISION REPAIR TECHNOLOGY

The Auto Body program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair damaged automotive vehicles such as automobiles and light trucks. Students learn to examine damaged vehicles and estimate cost of repairs; remove, repair and replace upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window and seat operating equipment and trim to gain access to vehicle body and fenders; remove and replace glass; repair dented areas; replace excessively damaged fenders, panels and grills; straighten bent frames or unibody structures using hydraulic jacks and pulling devices; and file, grind and sand repaired surfaces using power tools and hand tools. Students refinish surfaces by painting with primer and a finish coat.
AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS TECHNOLOGY

The Automotive Technology program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to engage in the servicing and maintenance of all types of automobiles and light trucks. This program includes instruction in the diagnosis and testing, including computer analysis, of malfunctions in and repair of engines, fuel, electrical, cooling and brake systems, drive trains and suspension systems. Instruction is also given in the adjustment and repair of individual components and systems such as fuel system components and air conditioning, and includes the use of technical repair information and the procedures for state inspection.

The Diesel Mechanics Technology prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to the specialized maintenance and repair of trucks, buses, and other commercial and industrial vehicles. The program includes instruction in diesel engine mechanics, suspension and steering, brake systems, electrical and electronic systems, preventive maintenance inspections, drive trains, HVAC systems, and auxiliary equipment installation and repair.
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TRADES

The Building Construction program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills in the erection and installation of buildings and other structures using assorted materials such as metal, wood, stone, brick, glass, concrete and composition substances. Instruction is provided in the basic skills of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting and decorating and a variety of activities associated with building construction. Some of these activities include but are not limited to blueprint reading; cost estimating; the use of a variety of hand and power tools; cutting, fitting, fastening and finishing various materials; and applying technical specifications and knowledge concerning the physical properties of materials.
MECHANICAL TRADES: HEATING, VENTILATION & AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC)

The HVAC program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to install, repair, and maintain commercial and residential heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The instruction includes theory and application of basic principals involved in conditioning of air (cooling and heating); filtering and controlling humidity; operating characteristics of various units and parts; blueprint reading; use of technical reference manuals; the diagnosis of malfunctions; overhaul, repair and adjustment of units and parts such as pumps, compressors, valves, springs and connections, and repair of electrical/electronic and pneumatic control systems.

This is a state licensed course designed to provide the student with fundamentals needed to prepare for the state board examination. Instruction is provided in chemical textures, hair coloring and lightening techniques, haircutting and hair design, microdermabrasion, glycolic peels, facials, superfluous hair removal, styling eyebrows, pedicures, manicures, and nail art. Practical experience is gained by providing services through the operation of a clinic whereby students work on each other’s hair and work on volunteer “customers” from the community.

This program provides instruction in the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of children. Students will learn to attend to children’s basic needs, organize activities, develop curriculum, prepare lesson plans, design and manage programs, and effectively deliver instruction in childcare, pre-school, and elementary settings. Theory in this course includes human development, psychology, ethical and professional responsibilities, communication, and the interaction of child, family, community, and schools. Clinical experiences will provide opportunities for students to develop the skills necessary to become successful future teachers and childcare providers while working directly with young children in childcare centers

WELDING TECHNOLOGY

The Welding Technology program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills in gas, arc, shielded and non shielded metal arc, brazing, flame cutting and plastic welding. Hand, semiautomatic and automatic welding processes are also included in the instruction. Students learn safety practices and types and uses of electrodes and welding rods; properties of metals; blueprint reading; electrical principles; welding symbols and mechanical drawing; use of equipment for testing welds by ultrasonic methods and destruction and hardness testing; use of manuals and specification charts; use of portable grinders and chemical baths for surface cleaning; positioning and clamping; and welding standards established by the American Welding Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Bureau of Ships.
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
CAPSTONE COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
This program is open to seniors who are enrolled in a Northern Tier Career Center program (Diesel, Health Assistant, etc.) and have obtained employment in a program related job (mechanic, CNA). The student receives career- related theory and hands-on instruction in the school and on-the-job training through part-time paid employment in business/industry. Students may be placed on Capstone Cooperative Education anytime during their senior year. Students must document at least 12.5 hours per week of paid employment while participating in the Capstone Cooperative Education program.
Employers include health care facilities, building contractors, heavy equipment dealers, and automotive repair shops.
Related occupations, the nature of work, training and advancement, job outlook, and earnings vary by career objectives.
